What is GPS (GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM)
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed in orbit by the United States Department of Defense. However, GPS originally intend for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. Therefore, GPS works in any weather condition, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or setup charges for using GPS.
GPS History
1957
In 1957, the Soviet Union launched the Sputnik I satellite into space, which was monitored by observing the Doppler effect of the signal it was transmitting. Due to this fact, it began to be thought that, in the same way, the position of an observer could establish by studying the Doppler frequency of a signal transmitted by a satellite whose orbit was precisely determined.
However, The US Navy quickly applied this technology to provide fleets’ navigation systems with up-to-date and accurate position observations. This is how the TRANSIT system emerge, which became operational in 1964, and by 1967 it was also available for commercial use.
1973
In 1973, the Navy and the United States Air Force programs combines (the latter consisting of an encoded transmission technique that provided accurate data using a signal modulated with a PRN code (Pseudo-Random Noise: pseudo-noise). -random), in what became known as the Navigation Technology Program, later renamed NAVSTAR GPS.
1978 and 1985
Eleven experimental NAVSTAR prototype satellites develop and launch between 1978 and 1985, follow by other generations of satellites, completing the current constellation. However, Which was declare “Initial Operational Capability” in December 1993 and “Full Operational Capability” In April 1995.
